Some materials leave a mark long after the work is done.
A few months ago, I made a custom knife with a handle crafted from armadillo carapace. It wasn’t just the novelty of the material that stuck with me—it was the feel of it.
The shell had this organic, patterned texture that felt almost alive in the hand. There’s something deeply compelling about working with a material shaped entirely by nature, rather than by tools or flame.
That first build stayed on my mind, so I decided to revisit the carapace—this time as the centerpiece of a new series.
The result is The Armadillo Series: a small collection of custom knives built around the concept of contrast—an interplay between the engineered and the organic.
On one side is stainless Damascus steel, a technical achievement in itself: forge-welded, vacuum-folded, and acid-etched to reveal bold, layered patterns. On the other is armadillo shell, preserved in its natural form—rugged, untouched, and rich with character.
The first knife in the series is a variation on the Ani 3.2. It features stainless Damascus bolsters, pocket clip, and backspacer, with armadillo carapace scales lined subtly with carbon fiber.
The second piece reimagines the Curator 3.5 as a cigar cutter—designed with a 64-gauge cutout and the same balance of refined and raw.
Each of these knives was made as a one-of-one, and they’ve already found their way to collectors. But this series is something I plan to return to—and if one of these pieces speaks to you, feel free to reach out.
