Most of my recent knife drops have featured Nitro V stainless steel, so this week, I decided to surprise you with a piece showcasing a more expressive visual character.

This Gyuto contrasts the classic knife shape with an unrestrained laminate pattern flowing on both sides. I also extensively used copper, which will develop a beautiful and characteristic tarnish over time.

For the blade, I created a laminate of a 52100 high-carbon steel core and 1084/15n20 Damascus clad San-Mai, resulting in a strong and striking pattern.

The pattern was forged with a vertically oscillating flow that provides a visual narrative starting from the forged scales and Damascus pattern along the spine, to the ripples of copper, and eventually to the stark high-carbon steel core along the cutting edge.

I finished off the blade with a high zero-ground double bevel grind and balanced it an inch in front of the handle.

I carried this motif to the handle with copper dovetailed bolsters and Corby bolts, embellishing the stabilized blue maple burl sculpted to fit perfectly in the hand. The stabilized blue maple burl scales are joined with the copper Corby bolt and envelope the tapered tang with carbon fiber liners on each side.

Overall, I designed this knife with copper as the keystone element, creating an intriguing visual narrative as the eye flows from one material to the next. The interaction of copper with time, developing a unique tarnish, adds another layer of interest and character to the piece.
