“A fossilized material so rare and ancient, artfully sculpted into a pocketable and versatile folding knife”

After wrapping up my last project with the Damascus Clad San-Mai blade, I decided to take on a unique challenge: creating a folding knife featuring Fossilized Mammoth Molar Ivory. This ancient material, preserved over millennia, brings a remarkable texture and visual depth to the design.

Drawing inspiration from the concept of Yin and Yang, I aimed to let the Mammoth Molar Ivory flow seamlessly across the knife handles. The goal was to sculpt a bespoke, versatile knife that celebrates this rare material.

For the blade, I chose Damasteel with a striking flowing pattern to complement the burl-like textures of the Mammoth Molar Ivory. The blade features a false edge opposite the cutting edge, adding character and visual intrigue, along with a polished thumb stud crafted from the same Molar Ivory.

The blade is integrated into the knife with a pivot that showcases two different configurations on each side. One side features a Hex Petal Steel Pivot with a Pivot Collar made of Fossilized Mammoth Molar Ivory, while the other side consists of a Steel Pivot and a Molar Ivory Inlay.

The pivots are housed in Double Black Micarta scales, which flow down the handles into the Fossilized Mammoth Molar Ivory. I laminated the Molar Ivory onto Carbon Fiber liners and assembled all the layers together with a titanium backspacer. To ensure secure pocket carry, I added a Damasteel pocket clip.

The result is a stunning folding knife with a distinct visual flow, starting from the rippled patterns of the Damasteel to the contrasting Double Black Micarta and the rich textures of the Fossilized Mammoth Molar Ivory. This piece combines the extraordinary story of an ancient material with bespoke craftsmanship, making it a pocketable work of art.
