Slice of the Sea: A Folding Knife for an Ocean Lover

CPM MAGNACUT LINER LOCK FOLDING KNIFE WITH STABILIZED BLUE MAPLE BURL, TITANIUM HARDWARE, AND BLACK LIP MOTHER OF PEARL

A friend of mine in the food industry, who also happens to be an avid diver and food entrepreneur, approached me with a special request. She wanted an everyday knife that not only could accompany her on outdoor adventures but also allow her to enjoy cooking in any environment.

I embraced the opportunity to craft something that mirrored the colors and movements of the ocean—from the sloping shore to the rolling waves.

For this project, I finally had the chance to work with stabilized blue maple burl, a material whose swirling patterns perfectly capture the watery hues. I accented this with black lip mother of pearl, which offers a subtle iridescence, reflecting the light in ways that mimic the refraction of shifting seas. These were shaped into disc inlays for the handle.

The blade was crafted from CPM MagnaCut, the toughest steel I've dealt with so far. Despite it being a challenging grind, the durability of MagnaCut makes it ideal for a knife meant for both culinary tasks and rugged outdoor use.

To round out the build, I crafted the hardware from titanium, including a pivot collar and thumb studs from the same polished black lip mother of pearl, ensuring both resilience and continuity in design.
